Make Algae Great Again

The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool was constructed in 1923. It sits prominently between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, and is managed by the National Park Service. It’s a beautiful, peaceful site.

In 2012, the pool was found to be leaking about 25-30 million gallons of water annually. A reconstruction project was considered successful, yet soon after the project was completed an algae bloom appeared. Where were the people who were recently singing to the algae in 2012?

Yes, you read the previous line correctly. There was a group of protesters at the Reflecting Pool singing to the algae and yelling, “grow algae, grow!” They were celebrating the failed restoration. Why anyone would celebrate this is beyond my understanding.

My hope is to lift others up, that they will see their own inner beauty and potential. Tearing others down or celebrating a failure is for the weak.

Be strong…

The Car Wash

Many gas stations have automatic car washes available for a fee after you fill your tank. Recently, I used one and the similarity between the car wash and people struck me. The car may be clean on the outside, but inside it’s still dirty. It needs some attention on the interior.

Some people look great when you meet them. But as you get to know them you begin to see a different person emerge. Arrogance, insecurity, even cruelty are hidden beneath the surface. Suddenly their outer beauty melts away and you see them in a whole new way.

Jesus spoke of this when he called out some of the Pharisees. He criticized them for being “clean on the outside but unclean on the inside.” Jesus can see straight through to the heart of mankind. It takes us a little longer!

I encourage you to look beneath the surface. Look at the heart. It’s revealed by our actions.

A kind heart is a special kind of beauty…

Beautiful

Do you ever look at the night sky and think, how beautiful the stars look? I do. I’m in awe of the natural beauty that surrounds us. It’s everywhere. The mountains and the oceans are magnificent.

It’s said that “beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” and there’s a lot of truth in that. No one thinks your children are as beautiful as you think they are. The lens we view the world through matters.

Take in all of the beauty around you, and take care of nature. It’s all we have…

Newness…

When we go on vacation, everything we experience is new to us. The neurons in our brain go crazy, creating new neural pathways where our feelings are forever stored. This is healthy exercise for our minds. I encourage you to try to experience something new every day, even if it’s changing the way you drive to work. You will feel the difference…

Appearances…

We don’t know what others are going through. Mental health and wellness have been shattered in the past year because of isolation, lack of socialization, and sometimes the loss of loved ones. The most well put together person on the outside might be doing all they can to just hold it together…they are making an appearance.

Beauty…

Today’s culture places a high premium on physical beauty, fashion and the latest style trends. My focus is on the heart of a person, their inner beauty. That beauty is true, right and noble…
