Who Knew?
Every experience we have in life prepares us for something else. This includes both the good and the bad experiences. I grew up in an abusive home. I hated my parents, my life, and I hated God for putting me in that family. What I couldn’t know at the time was, this experience prepared me to be able to connect with kids. Today, I have the privilege of speaking to kids in detention centers and foster homes. The kids don’t see me as just another old person telling them what to do. When I describe what my life was like as a child, they see me as one of them. We connect. This brings me more inner joy than anything I do. Oh, who knew? God knew what He was planning for my life. The Rangers had a man in custody who had confessed to three murders in Vic’s jurisdiction, and they wondered if Vic wanted to have his picture taken with the Rangers when they closed out the cases? Patience…
It’s said that patience is a virtue, but I see it as an opportunity when we practice patience. Why do we get upset or angry when traffic is moving slowly. Or if the checkout line at the grocery store is long? These opportunities, and other similar circumstances allow us to slow down, notice the people around us, and perhaps take time to engage with them. Our culture is a culture of busyness, not human connection. We need to connect with others…and stop rushing through life.
Alone
If we learned anything from the pandemic, it’s that we are not meant to be alone. We are hardwired to be connected with each other…in community. Reach out to someone who might be by themselves. Just check in with them. Saying a simple “hello” might be exactly what they need…
