What Are You Thinking?

You have heard it said that we become what we think about, and it’s true. Our thoughts are powerful, and they control our actions to an extent that is more than we realize. Thus, be diligent with controlling your thoughts.

If you want to regain your health, fill your mind with information about healthy eating and exercise. Start an exercise routine. Focus on your long-term goals, and realize that you are making progress every day. Think about what you are gaining by jettisoning a crappy diet and sedentary lifestyle.

Nowadays it seems most people are thinking about politics. That is wasted energy. Congress will continue wasting trillions of dollars while the time you spend fuming about “the other side” has robbed you of valuable time. Regain control of your time.

Decide what you want from your life. It’s been written to begin with the end in mind, so think about how you want to be remembered. Then put your thoughts into action…

Simplicity

Life can be complicated. I spent years learning subjects in school that I wasn’t sure I would ever use. Reading and spelling were helpful to prepare me for life. Yet, I still cannot understand why geometry was so important.

We are all capable of making life harder than it should be. Some things can be accomplished through simple solutions. If it’s too easy, we question whether we might have missed something.

Simplicity reigns. We should take the time to rid ourselves of clutter and unnecessary noise. Focus on important things like family, friends and making a difference.

Keep it simple. It’s not that hard…

Do Nothing

Everyone can use a day off. Sometimes we just need a break. And that’s okay. In fact, it’s healthy.

American culture has tried to dictate to us that if we aren’t the busiest person around, then we have little or no worth. This isn’t true. Being productive is far superior to just busyness. To be our best, we need to rest and recharge.

Take some time off occasionally. The work will be waiting for you upon your return…

But Everyone is Doing It!

Peer pressure is huge when you are a child. Kids desperately want to “fit in” and be included in the group. This is especially true during the period when boys and girls bodies are changing, and teenage rebellion kicks in. Things might not be great at home, so kids go looking for acceptance elsewhere.

This carries over into adulthood, too. If you have ever worked in a team environment, there is usually one person who wants the others to see things their way. Unity isn’t always the best option. Thinking differently brings different results.

You were created as one unique individual. There is no one like you, and there never will be. Don’t be concerned about fitting in, especially if groupthink goes against your values and beliefs.

Make your life count. Use your unique gifts and talents to leave the world better than you found it…

If I Had A Superpower

When I was a child, I loved Superman comic books. I thought, how cool it would be to fly, have x-ray vision, and to be faster than a speeding bullet. Let’s not forget that Superman was built like a bodybuilder and he got all the girls!

Humans don’t get to have superpowers, but if we did, I would want mine to be the ability to take away people’s pain. It troubles me when I see people struggle or in deep pain and despair.

Fortunately, I don’t have that superpower. Pain is a tool which can bring growth and resilience. If I could take away pain, I would be denying others the ability to grow through the pain and become who they are.

Pain is part of everyone’s life. Don’t waste it by wishing it away. By getting through it, fighting through it, you are being prepared for something greater.

Keep going…

Keep It Simple

We all know people who like to demonstrate their great knowledge by using words most people don’t understand. In my opinion, those people are showing their lack of knowledge about a particular subject, and by using rarely used, difficult words they keep others from engaging with them and exposing them.

Simplicity reigns. It is possible to take a difficult subject and discuss it in ways that keep people interested. This encourages dialogue, even allowing opposing views to come out. This is how you connect with others and grow.

You can be the smartest person in the room without telling anyone that you are. Keep it simple…

Obsess Over It

What drives you? What would you spend your time doing whether you were paid or not? The answer is the key to your true purpose in life.

It has been estimated that over 80% of people go to jobs they really don’t like. You cannot be effective when you aren’t fully engaged. This is something you can change if you are in this situation.

Change requires discomfort. When we are comfortable there is no reason to do anything different. Motivation comes when we become uncomfortable.

Take inventory of your strengths. Figure out what you love to do. You don’t need to have everything figured out. Just do it…

Unnatural

Worry is unnatural and unnecessary. When you take a moment to consider it, we weren’t born knowing how to worry. We learned how. Let’s dive a little deeper.

Perhaps we were raised by parents who worried. For certain, our world will give us much to worry about when you consider everything going on around us. But let’s change the word “worry” to concern. Being concerned rather than worried changes the narrative. Speaking of narratives, the media preys on people’s emotions such as worry. “You must stay tuned or you might miss something.” You will miss nothing. Tune out.

Replace your worries with childlike curiosity. Are you concerned about your health? Read scientific applications for better health. Do you want to be a better parent? Read credible resources about parenting and talk to people who have raised solid children. Do you see what I mean?

You aren’t going to miss a thing by turning off the news. So, don’t worry about it!

Different On Purpose

The same way of doing things might work for a while, but to grow you must evolve. Situations change, as do people. Don’t fall into the limiting trap that says “we’ve always done it this way.”

Be on the lookout for new opportunities. Think and be different on purpose. Look at every situation through multiple lenses. Then be open to taking a chance to be different.

Life itself is full of risks. Nothing great ever happened by playing it safe…

Dopamine

Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that is present in all of us. Dopamine is involved in a lot of what we feel during the day. Motivation, our attention span, and pleasure are some of the areas dopamine effects.

Dopamine can manifest some negative effects, too. Addiction to drugs, alcohol, online games, anything really addictive are related to dopamine production.

We can increase our dopamine levels naturally by exercising, getting good sleep and meditating. If you don’t like to meditate, try your hand at writing because writing hits the same center in the brain that meditation does.

Understanding how our bodies work is key to improving our health, and overall our lives. I encourage you to take time to learn about how dopamine plays a part in your life, and then put what you learned to work…
