Harry Hunsicker is a bestselling author, and the creator of the film “(S)hit Squad.” Harry joined me in studio to discuss writing, getting ”the voices inside his head” turned into characters, and how he didn’t give up after sending out over 100 manuscripts until he found the one who said yes! Repentance
Repentance is a word I rarely use because it sounds too religious. Let’s take a deeper look into what the word means in today’s blog.
To repent means to “change your mind.” But it doesn’t mean change your mind in the sense of “today I planned to wear green but decided on blue instead.” No, it means to change the way you think. When we change our mindset, we change our outcomes.
Change can be hard. I get that. But if the old way of thinking hasn’t served you well, it’s probably worth taking on the challenge of change…
Build That Wall!
Boundaries are something many people struggle with. For a period in my life, I couldn’t bring myself to say “no” to anything people asked of me. As a result, I would end up doing a lot of things half-ass. By not giving my best, my self-esteem took a hit.
After doing a lot of self-work (12 years of psychotherapy and counting), I learned it’s okay to say no. Setting boundaries is a form of standing up for yourself. By doing this, I became more effective in the things I said yes to.
Learn to say no. Say yes to whatever is enriching and edifying to your life. The first time is the hardest, but that’s how you grow…
Talent
Life isn’t a spectator sport. We must play the game every day and give it everything we have in us.
All of us have unique gifts and talents. Use yours, not merely for yourself, but to benefit others as well.
Make a difference…
Start
People believe they must have everything aligned perfectly before beginning a new, worthwhile venture. Or they need more education. Or time. Or money. Or whatever excuse they conjure up.
Here’s a secret for you: you do not need perfect alignment, education, time or money or anything else. Commit your work to honoring God, ask Him for guidance, keep asking along the way, and begin. That’s it!
Then keep going, no matter what…
Reborn
I get it. Change is hard, or is it? The battle is in our mind and our thoughts will dictate our actions.
If you desire to change something in your life, you cannot remain the same person with the same behavior. Think of change as a form of rebirth. You become like the butterfly, released from a dark cocoon, free to fly wherever you want to.
Start by changing one thing, only one. See yourself succeeding in your mind’s eye. Commit to it for one month. Watch what happens…
Educated
Most people like to think of themselves as smart. In many ways they are. There are other types of intelligence than IQ.
We should focus on educating ourselves on the important issues of today. There are opinions everywhere, and opinions are fine but what is the basis for them?
Educate yourself. Learn. Be open-minded, willing to change as your level of understanding evolves…
Chains
Everyone has a past. Some are pretty dark, but God brought them into the light. Yet, I meet people who are still chained to their pasts. At least they believe they are.
Forgiving yourself is the hardest kind of forgiveness. It’s necessary because then you can grow. You can never forget your past, but when you forgive yourself you see how God can use it to help others.
If this is one of your life challenges, I encourage you to start on the path to self-forgiveness by making a list of everything you are grateful for. Gratitude changes us. Our view of the world grows. We see the art and beauty in other people, and that includes those who are still living in darkness…
Education
We place a premium on higher education. No doubt it shows a level of determination and intelligence to earn a degree. But there’s more.
There are two other types of intelligence beyond our IQ. Our personality plays a large part in how successful we become. If you can’t get along with people, you probably won’t get very far because we need other people to work with us.
The greatest success comes to those who show a high level of adaptability. Being flexible and adjusting to change quickly is tantamount to successful outcomes. Applying what we know while being adaptable inspires the creative talents we all possess.
It’s good to be smart. It’s better when you are adaptable…
Quiet
Quiet moments can be uncomfortable. It seems like our brains resist the calm. Yet, when we get away from the noise, our clearest thinking happens.
I encourage you to take a few moments each day to quieten your mind. Just sit in silence. The noise will be waiting when you return…
