The Heart of Mankind

Any day of the week you can open your Facebook app and see countless people tearing others down. Their favorite subject is politics, but religious beliefs get tossed in, too. This ugliness reflects what lies in their hearts.

On the other side of that coin, I see the goodness in mankind appear when tragedy strikes. After the devastating floods in Kerrville this past summer, countless people volunteered to help. No one demanded to be put alongside people with similar politics. No, they put that bullshit aside and helped. Perhaps this is why these events are called “acts of God.” In these moments mankind is most like the Creator.

I believe most people are good. The harshness of life has knocked all of us down. Dreams get postponed or diverted. Yet in the final analysis people show up when life is at its worst. This is a reflection of their true self, their heart.

Every day is a new opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others. It could be something as simple as a smile or buying someone a sandwich. It counts to the other person even if it seems small and insignificant to you. Look for opportunities.

Life is very busy and full, I know. Never find yourself too busy to demonstrate the goodness that lies in your heart. Others will benefit but so will you…

Boredom

Most of life is routine. Every morning I shower and shave, but I don’t get excited about it or look forward to it. It’s just stuff that I do. You would only notice if I didn’t do those things for a few days. There are better ways to get attention!

What do you do when boredom sets in? Many people find something to occupy their attention because the thought of sitting still horrifies them. Being constantly entertained is as bad as drifting through life lazily. They are extremes.

My encouragement to you is to sit quietly in the solitude. You aren’t required to be busy all the time. Boredom is just a state of mind. Find inner peace in the quiet moments. Life will get interesting soon enough…

Humor Me

As you probably know, I love to laugh and make others laugh. Humor is a healthy emotion. Yet, I see some people who have lost their sense of humor.

Politicians are easy to make fun of. Elizabeth Warren claimed that she was an American Indian. She made this ridiculous claim for decades until she was challenged to take a DNA test. She’s not an Indian.

Bernie Sanders used to be in charge of the Senate Budget Committee. The man has never set a budget in his life. And he has no budget constraints because he thinks everything should be free! That math only works in Washington.

Some people think I’m being unfair when I joke about their favorite politician. It’s just a joke, nothing more. The offended people are free to make fun of me, and I give them plenty of material!

There’s always something to laugh about. Keep the humor clean, not dark-hearted. Laughter is really good for us.

God laughs, too. I’m certain that He laughs at me daily. But that’s okay. I’m making the Creator of the Universe smile!

No Judgment Zone

From my observation, there are a lot of judgmental people in society. I realize my opening statement sounds like I’m making a judgment. I’m not. It’s simply an observation.

The genesis of gossip is judgment. You see, the root cause of judgment is insecurity. Gossiping about others is an arrogant attempt to make ourselves look better. Comparison gives the weak-minded a brief sense of superiority, but their insecurity remains.

There is only one true judge. God alone knows all the facts. We aren’t given the privilege to have full insight into other people.

Some of the Pharisees during Jesus’s time were disgusted that Jesus would hang out with prostitutes and tax collectors. But Jesus looked straight through people and peered into their hearts. He saw that the people needed restoration and redemption, while some of the Pharisees needed a cleansing on the inside. And he told them so.

My encouragement to you is to try to let go of judging others. See them for who they are, not just what you see on the outside. And leave the judging to God. He will handle it…

Insanity

A recent magazine cover featured nine men dressed as women. The cover held the title, “Women of the Year.” It wasn’t Mad Magazine or The Babylon Bee. This photo with the accompanying article was in Glamour Magazine.

Men cannot become women and vice versa. Sex is determined by chromosomes. We do not possess the science and technology to alter chromosomes.

Glamour Magazine is read by mostly young women. What kind of message is this sending our population? We should be celebrating the beautiful beings who are women, not a bunch of wannabes.

There is acceptance and there is approval. I accept everyone because God created us. But I have a choice and I don’t approve of men trying to act like women. It is my personal opinion that there may be some mental illness involved.

Part of the world has gone insane. This is just one representation of the insanity. There’s more. Much more…

Reports Don’t Tell You Everything

Have you ever seen a marketing report? They are not only boring, they can be highly inaccurate. Yet corporate America continues to spend millions of dollars on them.

People want relationships which are more than transactional. Relationships are built on trust. Remember those market reports from above? Agencies even query consumers about which brands they trust. Again, costing millions of dollars that could be used to improve products.

There is one true source that cannot let us down. It talks about trust and incudes pieces on how to market effectively. I’m talking about the Bible. The Bible shows us that time and time again we can trust God. He tells us to be fair and equitable in dealing with others. Your reputation spread by word of mouth is the best marketing tool available. Your reputation is built by being trustworthy, treating people fairly.

Spend time with people. Strengthen your relationships. Stay in touch. You can read the marketing reports later…

Win Some. Lose Some. Win In The End…

Life isn’t fair. It has its share of ups and downs. Victories and losses. Happy times and long, lonely days and nights. Neither the good periods or the bad ones last forever. But we do.

God didn’t create us and then forget about us. He put us here for a purpose. Part of that purpose is to prepare us for eternity. We won’t be sitting around doing nothing on the other side of life.

The heart of man is what God wants. He spoke about this all through the Bible. He looks through us, all the way down to the fiber of our DNA. Then He looks a little further.

I encourage you to welcome the challenges life throws your way. God is preparing you for something. Be vigilant…

Peace Through Strength

Ronald Reagan popularized the phrase “peace through strength” during the Cold War. He was responsible for revitalizing our military with the belief that the best deterrent was to be the strongest nation militarily. It worked.

Critics believe that this approach provokes our enemies. They believe everyone plays nice in the sandbox. If we leave them alone they will leave us alone. It’s a nice thought but it’s a naive belief. Bad actors want power and domination. It’s up to us good guys to stop them. We can and they know we can.

Jesus showed peace through strength, too. When the opportunistic merchants took over the Temple, selling doves, cattle and sheep for Passover, Jesus made a whip from three cords and drove the animals from the Temple, his Father’s House.

Jesus was a badass who was filled with righteous anger that day. It must have been an impressive experience because the story is told in all four of the Gospels.

We need to show strength when we witness people being taken advantage of. There are a handful of bullies out there who pick on others. Remember that the bully is the most scared person around. They are scared so they want you to be scared, too.

Peace through strength is effective in deterring evil. It works in geopolitics just like it worked in the Temple. Be strong…

Forgetful

Do you ever walk into a room and forget why you went in there? My favorite thing to forget is people’s names. Faces I remember. Names no.

Many people are carrying painful memories in their hearts. As humans, we cannot forget. God alone has that power. But we can forgive. Forgiveness changes the dynamics of the pain.

We don’t want to forgive because by forgiving them we feel like we are letting them off the hook. And they don’t deserve our forgiveness. This is all true, but forgiveness is for you, not the offender.

When you forgive someone, it’s like releasing an imaginary weight you have been carrying around. The offense no longer has any power or influence over you. You don’t forget. You release.

Forgiveness is hard, I know. It takes time. You cannot force it, but you can stay open to it. If you close the door to forgiveness, it’s really difficult to open it.

Keep the door open, just a tiny crack. See what happens…

Talk Therapy

It feels good to get something off your chest. There’s an unseen chemical reaction in our brains that releases endorphins and lowers stress when we talk about the things that are bothering us.

Holding things in can damage us in unseen ways as well. Unresolved tension can cause disease, spikes in blood pressure and inflammation. Just because you don’t see it doesn’t mean it isn’t happening. I don’t see gravity but I know it’s there and it’s working.

In the beginning of time as we know it, God said it “isn’t good for man to be alone.” We are meant to be in community with others. Having some alone time or solitude is healthy. Isolation can be destructive.

Be sure you are spending quality time with your friends. Be a good friend for them, too. Just like you, they need people to talk to, too…
