Mother’s Day

In 1908 Anna Jarvis held the first Mother’s Day celebration in West Virginia. By 1914 the movement to honor the sacrifices of Mothers had gained so much momentum that President Woodrow Wilson declared the second Sunday in May as the official day.

Devoted Mothers should be honored longer than just one day. They can handle a lot of things at the same time and do them well. Women really can multitask while men are one trip wonders!

The celebrations will be held today. Families will gather to honor the Mothers in their lives. But it is my hope they celebrate quietly. There are women who wanted children but couldn’t have them, as well as those who lost a child. They grieve silently.

Anna Jarvis became critical of the commercialization around the movement she started. She was right. Yet it doesn’t change the honor bestowed on Mothers. Nor should it…
